BLEEDING
What should I know about bleeding?
⢠Bleeding may start immediately after taking Misoprostol or may take 24 hours to start (sometimes bleeding starts after the Mifepristone, but itās still important to take the Misoprostol as directed).
⢠If you are less than 6 weeks pregnant the bleeding may be light and not fill a pad. If you are further along you may pass small or large blood clots (the size of a lemon or more) and you may see an embryo or fetus.
⢠Bleeding may last for several weeks. It can be unpredictable and it can last all the way up until your period comes again.
⢠It can be steady, stop-and-start, or vary in intensity.
⢠First periods after the process come back in 1-3 months and may be heavier than usual.
What if I am not bleeding enough?
⢠Some providers give extra Misoprostol. Taking more Misoprostol can be safe. You can contact your provider or the M + A Hotline to talk about taking more Misoprostol.Ā
⢠If your pregnancy symptoms (nausea, tiredness, breast tenderness, etc) are decreasing, the process likely worked.
What if Iām bleeding too much?
⢠It is normal to have heavy bleeding after taking Misoprostol. Many people see a lot of blood in the toilet and that can be normal. Stay well hydrated with water during the process.
⢠Soaking two large maxi pads per hour for more than two hours in a row is a reason to contact your provider or the M + A Hotline to discuss how youāre feeling.
What if the bleeding has an odor?
⢠Slight odor after a week or two is normal and will go away. Avoid douching.Ā

How to check if the abortion pills worked?
⢠Even if you had bleeding, make sure to check a pregnancy test at home in 4-6 weeks.
⢠Pregnancy symptoms usually go away in 1ā2 weeks.

⢠There are no routine blood or urine tests for the pills at the doctor or ER. The process looks like a natural miscarriage.
⢠If you put the pills in your vagina take out any pill pieces that may still be there.
⢠You donāt need to say anything about taking abortion pills. Before you go to the hospital, talk with any loved ones who know about your abortion about keeping your information private.
What do I do in case of an emergency?

DURING THE PROCESS
How will I feel during the process?
⢠Plan a time for the process when you can be in a comfortable place, and donāt have to work or take care of anyone else (it is safe to continue to breastfeed as usual during the process).
