Abortion Pills (Medical Abortion)
Medication abortion — also called the abortion pill — is a safe and effective way to end an early pregnancy.
When can I take the abortion pill?
Depending on where you stay, you may be able to get a medication abortion up to 77 days (11 weeks). If it has been 78 days or more since the first day of your last period, you can have an in-clinic abortion to end your pregnancy.
Why do people choose the abortion pill?
You can decide whom you want to be with during your abortion, or you can go it alone. Medication abortion is similar to a miscarriage, many people feel like it’s more “natural” and less invasive.

Do I need to see a doctor in person before using the pills?

How do I know how far along I am?

BLEEDING
What should I know about bleeding?
• Bleeding may start immediately after taking Misoprostol or may take 24 hours to start (sometimes bleeding starts after the Mifepristone, but it’s still important to take the Misoprostol as directed).
• If you are less than 6 weeks pregnant the bleeding may be light and not fill a pad. If you are further along you may pass small or large blood clots (the size of a lemon or more) and you may see an embryo or fetus.
• Bleeding may last for several weeks. It can be unpredictable and it can last all the way up until your period comes again.
• It can be steady, stop-and-start, or vary in intensity.
• First periods after the process come back in 1-3 months and may be heavier than usual.
What if I am not bleeding enough?
• Some providers give extra Misoprostol. Taking more Misoprostol can be safe. You can contact your provider or the M + A Hotline to talk about taking more Misoprostol.
• If your pregnancy symptoms (nausea, tiredness, breast tenderness, etc) are decreasing, the process likely worked.
What if I’m bleeding too much?
• It is normal to have heavy bleeding after taking Misoprostol. Many people see a lot of blood in the toilet and that can be normal. Stay well hydrated with water during the process.
• Soaking two large maxi pads per hour for more than two hours in a row is a reason to contact your provider or the M + A Hotline to discuss how you’re feeling.
What if the bleeding has an odor?
• Slight odor after a week or two is normal and will go away. Avoid douching.
AFTER TAKING THE ABORTION PILLS
How to check if the abortion pills worked?
• Even if you had bleeding, make sure to check a pregnancy test at home in 4-6 weeks.
• Pregnancy symptoms usually go away in 1–2 weeks.
• Make sure to check a pregnancy test at home 4-6 weeks after taking the medication. If the test is still positive 6 weeks after taking the medication contact your provider or the M + A Hotline.
Do I need to see a doctor after using the pills?
• Problems are very rare and less than 1% experience complications.
What if I need to see a doctor?
• You can describe your symptoms without mentioning taking pills.
• If you have the following symptoms more than 24 hours after taking misoprostol it is a good idea to call your provider, call the M+A Hotline or seek in person care if you have the following:
* A fever above 100.4
* Heavy bleeding soaking through 2 pads an hour for more than 2 hours
* Feeling dizzy/passing out
* Pain that isn’t getting better with pain medication and/or
* Very foul smelling vaginal discharge
What are some privacy tips?
• There are no routine blood or urine tests for the pills at the doctor or ER. The process looks like a natural miscarriage.
• If you put the pills in your vagina take out any pill pieces that may still be there.
• You don’t need to say anything about taking abortion pills. Before you go to the hospital, talk with any loved ones who know about your abortion about keeping your information private.
What do I do in case of an emergency?
• Go to the ER. You don’t need to mention abortion pills—describe your symptoms as a miscarriage.
DURING THE PROCESS
How will I feel during the process?
• Plan a time for the process when you can be in a comfortable place, and don’t have to work or take care of anyone else (it is safe to continue to breastfeed as usual during the process).
• You might have: Nausea (feeling sick), Vomiting (throwing up), Pain / Cramping (belly pain), Diarrhea (loose poop), Fever, Chills or Shaking, or Bleeding (with small or large blood clots).
• These symptoms should get better within 1 -2 days after taking Misoprostol.
How to feel better?
• Take 800mg ibuprofen OR 500mg naproxen for pain (these medications work better than acetaminophen alone for pain during the process).
• Stay hydrated by drinking water.
• Eat any type of food that comforts you.
• Take a bath or shower. Use a heating pad.
• Have a support person if possible – anxiety or feeling alone can make pain worse.
• Rest in a comfortable place.
• Using marijuana or cannabis products doesn’t affect how well the process works and can help with pain. More information here.
What if I’m not feeling enough pain? Should I worry?
No, everyone experiences the process differently. If you are bleeding, lack of pain doesn’t mean it’s not working.
In-Clinic Abortion Up To 17 Weeks
Many patients choose to end their pregnancy with a short, simple in-clinic procedure, known as a uterine aspiration.
Abortion from 17-25 Weeks
This procedure is commonly referred to as a “dilation and evacuation” or “D&E.” This procedure typically requires two appointments to give the cervix time to dilate slowly and gently overnight.
Abortion From 25-32 Weeks 6 Days
This three-day abortion procedure is called the Trust Induction-Evacuation. In some cases, depending on medical history, we may be able to perform the procedure in 2 days, but this is not common.
